![Sony Promises There'll Be Major PS5 Single Player Games Every Year Moving Forwards 1](https://images.pushsquare.com/2fcd9b5e47e3f/sony-promises-therell-be-major-ps5-single-player-games-every-year-moving-forwards-1.900x.jpg)
Sony shocked PS5 fans earlier this year when it said there’ll be no major first-party games in 2024. The quote was a little misinterpreted, as it still released Game of the Year candidate Astro Bot, among others. Either way, that won’t be the case moving forwards.
Speaking with investors as part of the platform holder’s latest financial report, boss Hiroki Totoki promised it’ll have “major single player game titles every year from next fiscal year onwards”. The company’s next fiscal year gets underway from 1st April, 2025.
Obviously, we already know Ghost of Yotei is slated for next year, and as we understand it the Japanese giant is still publishing Death Stranding 2: On the Beach. Meanwhile, other first-party teams, like Santa Monica Studio, Guerrilla Games, Bluepoint, Housemarque, and Naughty Dog all have unannounced projects in the works.
So there’s lots to look forward to on the PS5 front, and the second half of the generation is usually when Sony starts to gather momentum. Even as it looks to diversify its lineup with live service multiplayer games, it appears there’s still plenty of tentpole single player content on the way.

Please and thank you
Hopefully more than just one each year. At least two big AAA and a few small titles would be great
Yo, thats actually good to hear. Totoki out here doing a better job than Hulst. Totoki for CEO! 😎
Already getting goosebumps just thinking about death stranding 2.
I surely hope they mean “major new single player game titles every year from next fiscal year onwards”
I know I'm supper bitter with this....
But,
NOW that the $700 pro is out, sony promises to go back to releasing exclusives every year?
Wow, thanks Sony.
This is great news. With that said, I don’t necessarily own a PS for its exclusives, although that plays a factor. PS is just my main choice for console gaming. For me, this year has been sublime, even with the lack of first party games.
Good to know!
A succinct roadmap wouldn't hurt either.
@Americansamurai1 they don’t have the studio’s to do that.
Especially as it’s taking 4yrs+ for AAA. That’s why they use timed exclusivity to fill the gaps
They already DO launch at least one major single player title a year:
2020 - TLOU2, Ghost of Tsushima, Spider-man: Miles Morales, Demon’s Souls
2021 - Returnal, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart
2022 - God of War Ragnarok, Horizon: Forbidden West, TLOU Pt1
2023 - Spider-man 2
2024 - Astro Bot
@PsBoxSwitchOwner they have like 15 studios, with a handful of them having multiple teams. Not to mention second party deals, so yes they can do it.
Actions speak louder than words. We've had nothing from naughty dog because sony enforced live service crap on them.
I'm very glad to hear that but as Red said above me actions speak louder than words hopefully they actually commit
I count 13 first party studios, that aren't supporting studios, or studios not likely to release another game this gen like Polyphony. 5 of which have multiple teams.
So in theory we might be getting 18 more first party games for the remaining generation. More if you count 2nd party. Thats around 4 a year. Not that they'd necessarily be distributed evenly throughout the years.
But this is all speculation ofcourse. It also depends on whether all these games in development, are being developed for current gen and not for next gen. But seeing as some, if not most of these developers havent released a game this gen, there’s a big chance that most is still coming out before the PS6.
@themightyant How DARE you forget to include Concord in 2024!
@CrispyMango92 It's not single player 🤫
Happy to hear this. Additionally, it would be great if Sony shows information about games they are going to release moving forward. I’d like to know about a games existence a year or so in advance, followed by previews and footage as the launch window approaches. The build up to the original PS4 God of War games was awesome. By the time the game was released I was super super excited. That’s how I want to feel about Sonys first party games moving forward!!
It's really hard, for me, to get excited for more sequels though. I hope we finally might get some fun and original new IP:s.
But I bet it's just more of those cinematic third-person games 😮💨
I was excited until I read “expect a mix of single-player and live service games in the medium term” smh…
So what was it this year? Concord and astrobot
@RedRiot193 we have last of us 2 remastered
@CrispyMango92 @themightyant It is now when you boot it up 🤭
@LogicStrikesAgain He's already got a better job, haha. He's president of Sony!
@themightyant it's funny that your list of first party games in any other gen would be seen as a real winner but I think the perception is that it somehow doesn't count because those games came on to PS4 too.
I took a bit of a step back and thought through everything I played on my PS5 and in all honesty while I think a few of the IP need a bit of freshening up, I have had a great time this gen and the best of it usually comes in the back half of a consoles life.
Redman featuring method man whathever man is what i would say to sony😄.word up son
This is why I buy PlayStation games. I left the PC master race around 2018 once I bought a PS4 Pro and started playing the wealth of story-driven single player games.
At the time my choice was to upgrade my 2012 gaming rig, or get the Pro version of the console I already had, but didn’t use much to that point. For me, that $400 white edition PS4 Pro from GameStop turned out to be the best decision I made. I’m still enjoying many of those games purchased back then on my new PS5 Pro.
It sounds like I won’t be the only person in my friends group using my PS5 all the time then! Lol. It’s seriously sort of a ghost town on there this generation. The last time I saw most everyone playing something, it was Final Fantasy Rebirth and before that, Final Fantasy 16, and before that probably Horizon/Elden Ring. It’s been a weird generation to see so many people switch to PC or go dormant outside massive releases (or worse… turn into casuals!). Ghost of Yotei and Death Stranding will get that ever wanted by execs “player engagement” they’re seeking.
@wildcat_kickz Hehe, yeah it was meant jokingly. I think he’s doing fine as CFO of Sony. But here he is, doing a better job than Hulst in creating a bit of excitement for Playstation.
@KillerBoy You‘re right, Concord was the biggest PS single player game in 2024.
@LogicStrikesAgain Haha, oh I totally get it. Unfortunately, there's more of an incentive to provide these nice, definitive updates to shareholders, rather than customers. Us customers have to deal with the wishy washy, non-committal updates from Herman.
I'll believe when I see it. 🙄
@KillerBoy lol
@wildcat_kickz Yes definitely, these are just some required updates from Sony. And still it has done much more to appease the fans a bit, than this show don't tell strategy Hulst has going on. Playstation fans out here hunkering for some info hehe. Still hope we get a 30th anniversary showcase. But dont wanna get my hopes up
@Medic_alert Totally agree. I didn't care that games come to PS4 as well, in fact I welcomed it becuse more players and more sales meant bigger budgets. Most of those games would have been smaller in scope if they were just on PS5 with a much smaller group of active players. Personally I've had a great time this gen. But we're past the first party cross-gen period and i'm excited to see what they can do.
I almost play exclusively second and third party games, so this does nothing to me. Only budding franchise that interests me currently is the Ghost-one.
Hopefully good stuff and more things like Astro Bot!
@Max_the_German I think only one person played it so yep it's a single player 😁
"Forwards" though? Did you all invent the language? Oh, I forgot. We won the war so we get to determine how it's used. LOL kidding.
@Ken_Kaniff if you read @themightyant original post, you'll see they've already been doing it. Many are too interested in being angry to notice what's in front of their very eyes.
Wait... Dark Cloud 3 incoming?!
And there you have it. My monthly obligatory "Dark Cloud 3 incoming" post. See you again in 4 weeks!
Yes, it's time for the awful live service push to end.
How about to scratch PS5 completely and save new singleplayer games to be launch titles for PS6? This generation is already wasted, so why don't start new one with solid basis?
Hopefully, more than iterative and frankly aging sequels. We need more new IP or at the very least new ideas. TLOU, Spiderboy, uncharted, horizon, and GOW are already losing their luster for me. Imagining another sequel if it's just the same we saw in their second outings is just not all that compellimg. Hell even if Ghost of Yotei doubles down on the very boring side content is a letdown for me.
So iterative in the most bland ways. Not To Mention the marvel junk is getting as boring as their movies.
I get I'm in the minority here speaking my mind and criticisms about modern day Playstation, on a Playstation site in which most are in a perpetual loop of brand allegiant excuse making and various other forms of echo chamber herd mentality.
However, I can't be the only one who is/was less enthused when the news broke that insomniac is just planning on a wolverine game and then more Spiderboy/venom. I feel like they have such talent and yet they along with other Sony studios, are stuck in sequel or marvel purgatory merely because it prints money.
I guess Concord could've been considered a single player game based on the player count.
Nothing hits quite like an empty promise 😌
@Duck_Farmer Oh geez, that is the sickest burn I've heard in a while. 🤣🤣🤣
Cool. I haven't had a PlayStation for a good few years now and I've been catching up on Sony's first-party games as they've been coming to PC. Rift Apart, Spider-Man, Miles Morales, Sackboy, Ghost of Tsushima; they're all excellent. The only one I didn't like was God of War. Keep them coming at a steady pace - even if it's only one or two a year - and I think everyone's happy.
@KundaliniRising333 GOW, TLOU, Spiderboy, Uncharted, and Horizon are Sony staples franchise along with Ghost of, Ratchet, GT, and MLB. It's like Nintendo with Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Fire Emblem, and Pokemon or Xbox with Halo, Gears, and Forza.
You're free to say you're tired of them. But a new sequel from those franchise is guaranteed to come out and millions of PS fans will buy it.
Example like GOW. The 2018 reboot (23 mill) + Ragnarok (15 million) sales combine is 38 million copies, much higher than GOW titles on PS2, PS3, and PSP combine.
Sony are dumb af if they abandon their money printing machines just because some people in the internet had enough of the franchise.
And i'm sure they're working on multiple new IP's. But the biggest question is the quality. This gen we already seen new IP's like Destruction AllStars and Concord failed miserably. But there's also a success like Returnal. So we will see if Fairgame$, Matter, and whatever unannounce new IP can sell well or not...
@PuppetMaster we have bluepoint and sony bends games which are supposed to be new ip's , san monica and naughty dog are also rumored to be working on new ip's as well. i mean wolverine would also count as a new ip for them right?
Which should be news to pretty much no one. Single player games is what they do.
Even if hypothetically they had a full year without a first party single player game or the previous announcement and Astro Bot... would you genuinely believe they wouldn't be working on some? We even know about some that are in the works already.
Not really need is it? "Sony announce they plan on continuing to do the thing they aim to do practically every year"
@twitchtvpat Yes. Housemarque, Bluepoint, and Bend Studio are working on a new IP.
ND and Santa Monica also working on a new IP beside TloU 3 and new GOW which they already confirmed from some interview or job listings. My guess is they probably save TloU 3 and new GOW for PS6 or cross gen release.
And yeah, i think we can count Wolverine as a new IP for Insomniac because this is the 1st time they're working on the IP.
Also. There's plenty of new IP from China, India, and Middle East-North Africa Hero Projects.
Single player titles don't have to be AAA just go back to your PS2 era and look there, it had some wonderful AA SP games
It doesn't have to be AAA and over the top graphics all the time
@Whately86 Not sure how the Pro being out has anything got to do with this?
Will these single player games not work on your base PS5?
Good news. Live service/looter shooters are boring as hell
I will believe it when I see it, my PS5 is basically gathering dust 😭
While I’m glad they still realise SP games are their strength, one a year really doesn’t sound like much.
With games taking more time than ever to develop and MS buying half the industry it’d be really good to see some new investments in their studios and/or acquisitions that are not live service acquisitions.
